The 802.11a standard operates in the 5.x GHz U-NII bands. The higher carrier frequencies dictate smaller antennas and a shorter range compared to 802.11b, but the 54Mb/s data rate is fast. The fast data rate is achieved using OFDM and built-in error correction.
