The 802.11b standard includes the use of CCK modulation, enabling data rates of 5.5 and 11 Mb/s while producing signal spectrum that appears identical to ordinary DSSS 802.11. The channels are also identical to DSSS 802.11, but the maximum range is shorter at the higher data speeds. 802.11b is backward compatible with 802.11.
