802.11 is the first standard of wireless local area network (WLAN), defined for MAC layer operation and three physical layers: DSSS and FHSS in the 2.4GHz band, and diffuse infrared (DFIR). For FHSS, the hop rates are not specified, but most 802.11 equipment hops between 10 and 50 channels per second. The DSSS implementation in the United States specifies 11 fixed channels, starting at 2412 MHz and spaced every 5MHz. 802.11 WLAN provides either 1 or 2Mb/s raw data rates over distances up to about 100 m.
